While many links to Drudgiana are, unfortunately, decayed, this transcript of a 1998 speech remains intact in the mummy and is a great historic reference point. “The Media Should Apologize” was back in the day when Matt was still learning the media ropes and at his most lovably geeky. The photo doesn’t do justice to the tortoiseshell specs he sported at the time.

Not exactly sure what kind of response he expected from Hillary when he tipped his hat to her. This was right after Lewinskygate. Was he trying to be a gentleman or being in-your-face?

The true golden moment comes at the end. If Arianna didn’t give him a hug and a smooch afterward, she’s one cold-hearted belle dame sans merci. “I’m a sucker for a cheap cry” comes out of Drudge’s mouth about as often as “I’ve been rhymed and slimed and told to get out of town…” He’s said before (but not in this particular speech) that he “teared up” when he hit the Enter button on the Monica release. Makes me want to FedEx him my famous pecan kugel with a note saying everything’s gonna be alright.
