Big Stink Over Gay Cowboy Flick

drudge gay cowboy

I caught Drudge Radio tonight where Matt was making a big stink about this upcoming oscar-worthy gay cowboy film. I guess it’s pretty raunchy. He has a flash on the Drudge Report now. I’m sure the film is explicit and will offend some, but it was just fun to hear Matt make such a stink over it. This kind of story is perfect for the radio show, where he can hit his more conservative audience. Yee-haw!

**Update - Just to clarify… I was mostly expressing my amusement at tuning into the radio show and hearing it. With Paris burning, the White House in hot water, a killer tornado, and major stories around the world happening, I was just struck with the humor of his “Gay Cowboy Film” report… Nothing wrong with him reporting it and no bone to pick with the movie or homosexuality. It was just a funny one for me. And the fact that he had a headline on the Drudge Report for 24 hours is making a pretty big fuss out of it in my book–10 million views on a typical day. It would be nice to have that kind of power…

LOL that’s part of why it was funny to see Matt make such a fuss. It’s funny on so many levels. :)

OK, I’ve linked to Matt’s cowboy pics before.

I don’t know, Lance. I was definitely listening close to Matt last night, and he loves to make mountains out of molehills, but I’ve got the radio show on tape, and the tone of his voice was pretty moderate and he remained politically neutral. He wasn’t nearly as hyped up on this as he has been on sillier things like Chris Rock hosting the Oscars.I think it’s worthy of fuss for a couple of reasons:

1 - While gay-themed movies are not unusual, this one is both sexually explicit and considered to be of good enough quality to be considered an award-winner.

2- Whether you agree with it or not, many prominent Hollywood names have political agendas and/or are deeply affected by and involved in gay righs issues. Matt closely follows the political wars between Hollywood and the network execs. Right now, with the Republicans dominating the executive branches, there’s a sense of urgency out there to put a human face on a political issue.

3 - While there are such things as gay rodeos and gays live everywhere, including Wyoming, one generally doesn’t expect a same-sex cowboy romance out in the mainstream media. I think Matt kind of buys into gay stereotypes to some degree. He’s used to seeing urban club kids tweak on the dance floor.

4 - As the gist of the conversation last night went, Wyoming is the last frontier for…well…frontier values. Matt goes where the stink is, and this movie is one big stink bomb on the red states waiting to happen!

4- Ellen DeGeneres is a contender for Oscars host.

5- Let’s not forget, Wyoming was the home of Matthew Shepard and his killers.

By the way…I think the fact that he’s calling attention to this movie suggests that he’s NOT gay. Since he’s denied it, why would he re-open that door in the media when people are going to immediately jump all over him for “hypocrisy”?

I posted an update with more thoughts…
