Quick Update

It’s my assumption at this point that unless something is seriously screwy with news reporting at the Cincinnati Enquirer (no relation to the other E), Drudge will formally announce his “radio retirement” at the Sunday night show with one of his famous lectures on media figures like Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite who don’t know when to ride off into the sunset. The radio listings are back up on the site, but they’re not updated and the show is on different stations in at least one market.  (On weeks he wasn’t broadcasting, he refrained from posting a Sunday headline, but I’ve never spotted or traced an outright removal of the station listing.)

Lots of red letter headlines on the site itself, but no reference to the reports on the end of the radio show.

In any case, the next four weeks should be mighty interesting. If you’re unable to listen live, you can also catch the show the next day at www.drudgeradioarchives.com.

I’m going to dig into my research archives for my favorite quotes and moments on the radio show. You are invited to post your most memorable moments on the radio show — funny, favorite, least favorite, what have you…bumper music, guests, and all… in the comment box below for a post on this subject.

This quote is from 2001~2002, and I think it’s probably my most favorite quote by him. :) Drudge was ranting about how skanky music and recording artists have become, and he was becoming more and more histrionic until finally he exclaimed, “It’s reached the point where you have to where a condom just to wald *in* to a Virgin Record store!”

::sigh:: I think that’s the moment I fell in love with him. :p

Another favorite moment of mine was when he was filling in for Bill Handle on KFI. Handle’s show starts at 5 in the morning, and Drudge was clearly still not awake. On top of being exhausted, he was extremely pissed off because he’d had a really difficult time getting to the radio station. At the time, KFI was located in Korea Town. The World Cup soccer championship was going on at that time, and South Korea was doing extremely well (I think this was back in 2002–maybe?), so the streets of Korea Town had just been *packed* with people who had gathered to watch the soccer tournament taking place on the other side of the world. At 4 in the morning, you basically *could not drive* in the streets of Korea Town because of all the people and all the cars. It was beyond crazy.

Drudge basically spent the first couple hours of the show complaining about all the crazy Korean’s gathering to watch the soccer game. That was funny in and of itself, but, on top of that, Drudge’s state of exhaustion seemed to give him a bit different style. He was still sharp tongued, but he wasn’t as quick or as peppy as he normally is, and he seemed to say whatever came into his head, and he didn’t really seem to care what anybody thought.

Finally, people started calling in and complaining that he was being racist toward Korean’s and that he ought to start talking about important issues.

“…talk about politics and what Gray Davis is doing.”

Drudge gave a deep sigh, and, in a voice that seemed wearied not only by lack of sleep but by the world and humanity in general, replied, “Sir, it’s 6:45 in the morning. Nobody cares.”

I must admit, I felt like the worst sort of groupie for waking up at 5 in the morning just to listen to Drudge, but it was totally worth it, and I still crack up thinking back on his performance that morning. :)

I like a lot of his music choices — and he’s made me laugh out loud too many times to count. Usually an off-the-cuff aside, right now I’m having a hard time recalling examples because of their nature. And sometimes he really suffers no fools when it comes to people who call and that can be humorous. Sometime late this winter or early spring, for example, and this is just one that comes to mind, some guy called in all enthusiastic, wanting to talk about John Mark Carr. Huh, who? You know, the nutso guy who, while teaching kids in Thailand, claimed to have been the person who murdered JonBenet Ramsey and flew back into the states amid a whole media circus. Last summer. This guy was talking about John Mark Carr like all of that news was unfolding/breaking even as he was speaking to Drudge and not already long forgotten. And you could almost hear it click in Drudge’s mind who this guy was talking about and the moment it did Drudge interrupted and said something like, “Sir, do you get your news by covered wagon?” and cut to the next caller.

    What happened to Lance?

He hasn’t had much time to come on here or the forum lately. Parenthood has a way of altering one’s routine. He is still the site administrator, however. Hopefully we’ll hear more feedback from him soon! :)

Favorite moments? Any appearance by Camille Paglia with Matt, all of them were enjoyable.

IIRC when Matt filled in for Rush (who was recovering from his cochlear implant operation) in early 2002 (?) Matt had Ms. Paglia on and with the 9/11 attacks on everyone’s minds she spoke her mind on America defending its sovereignty. A terrific interview.

Just loved the exclusive hour Matt used to do (9p-10p) on KFI radio for L.A. listeners too.

And I never realized how many different versions of Michel Legrand’s song ‘Windmills Of Your Mind’ there was!

BaloneyBlvd: If you haven’t already, Google Matt’s interview with Radar in 2003. He was interviewed by Camille and also Maer Roshan.

Camille is my favorite regular guest on Drudge Radio. I particularly liked the interview where she was plugging “Break Blow Burn”.

Legrand’s “Windmills” is apparently one of Matt’s favorites…he mentioned it in Drudge Manifesto.
